Wine myths to leave behind in 2025

The wine world is full of traditions, opinions, and… let’s be honest — myths that simply refuse to die.
As someone who came from the tech industry into winemaking, I’ve learned two things very quickly:
People love wine.
People are also deeply misinformed about wine.
So as we wrap up 2025, let’s clear the air and start the new year with clarity, confidence, and better wine choices.
Here are the top wine myths we should leave behind — for good.
Myth #1: “Expensive Wine Is Always Better.”
Price can reflect quality, craftsmanship, limited production, or rare Vintages — but it can also reflect marketing, hype, or location.
There are exceptional wines under $30 and disappointing wines over $100.
Why this myth needs to go:
Consumers deserve to explore wine without feeling pressured by labels and price tags. The best wine is the one crafted with intention and enjoyed in good company — not the one that empties your wallet.
What to do instead:
Trust your palate, not the price. Look for wineries that prioritize small-batch production, craftsmanship, and sustainable practices over prestige pricing.
Myth #2: “Red Wine Only Works With Meat.”
Not even close.
Today’s food culture is more diverse than ever — and so are wine pairings. Red wine can pair beautifully with vegetarian dishes, seafood, and even spicy cuisines.
Why this myth needs to go:
Modern winemaking offers lighter reds, soft tannins, and fruit-forward styles that work well with a broad range of flavors.
Try this instead:
Light reds with salmon
Medium-bodied reds with roasted vegetables
Fruity reds with charcuterie
Wine is an experience — not a rulebook.
Myth #3: “Wine Gets Better With Age.”
Some wines age beautifully.
Most wines, however, are crafted to be enjoyed young — while they’re vibrant, aromatic, and full of character.
Aging wine doesn’t automatically improve it. In fact, it can flatten flavors or dull aromas if the wine isn’t made to age.
Why this myth needs to go:
People end up “saving” wine for special occasions… only to open it years later and find it’s past its peak.

As we move into a new year, let’s embrace a mindset of curiosity instead of rules:

Ask questions
Explore new regions
Support independent wineries
Choose wines because you love them, not because tradition dictates it
Wine should be approachable — not intimidating.
Whether you’re celebrating a milestone or unwinding after a long week, the best wine is the one that brings you joy in that moment.
