What Quantum Computing and Wine Have in Common

I spent decades funding technology companies. Now I make wine in Armenia. People find the pivot surprising. I find it less surprising every year — because the more time I spend inside both worlds, the more I realize they operate on the same underlying logic.
Let me explain what I mean.
The most important work is the work nobody sees
By the time you open a bottle, you are tasting decisions made years earlier. Soil preparation. Pruning choices made in February for a harvest in September. Blending decisions in a cold barrel room in February. None of it is visible. The bottle doesn't come with a record of what it takes to make it.
Deep technology works the same way. By the time a quantum computing company is in the news, years of invisible work have already happened. Research dead ends. Engineering rethinks.. The headline announces the breakthrough; it says nothing about what preceded it.
This matters to me as an investor and as a winemaker, because it means the work that determines the outcome is rarely the work that gets evaluated. What gets evaluated is the result.
Patience isn't a personality trait. It's a skill you build under pressure.
I used to think patience was something you either had or didn't. The vineyard corrected me on that.
You cannot hurry a vine into producing better fruit. You can create conditions. You can make good decisions early. But you cannot compress the time it takes for something living to develop faster. The vine does not care about your timeline.
Quantum computing is the same, and it's a problem for the industry. The gap between what the science can currently do and what the market wants it to do creates enormous pressure—from investors —to present progress faster than it is actually occurring. The companies that survive that pressure without distorting their work are the ones worth paying attention to.
Both fields are slow. Both fields punish people who can't tolerate slow.
Enthusiasm is not expertise
I've met people who are passionate about wine. Most of them couldn't make a bottle worth drinking. Passion is the entry ticket; it is not the qualification.
Quantum computing has the same dynamic right now. There is real excitement about the category, and some of that excitement is ahead of the actual capability. That's fine — enthusiasm often precedes reality in technology, and eventually reality catches up. But the gap between what people believe is possible today and what is actually possible today is something a serious investor needs to understand.
In wine, small decisions — harvest timing, temperature during fermentation, how long the wine sits in oak — change the final product completely. People outside the field underestimate how much precision drives the outcome. People inside it think about almost nothing else.
Long cycles are an advantage if you can hold them
Wine regions don't follow quarterly expectations. A vineyard may take a decade to express what it's capable of fully. Alexandrea Winery's first Pinot Noir — Armenia's first commercial Pinot Noir — just won a gold medal at Concours Mondial de Bruxelles. We planted those vines years ago. We didn't know then whether they would work. We believed they would.
That's the posture you need in frontier technology too. By the time everyone believes in it, the early advantage is gone. The question that matters is whether the underlying direction is real — not whether it's popular yet.
Armenia wasn't on the wine world's map when I started. Quantum computing isn't fully on the commercial world's map yet. That is the point.
What you can control and what you can't
A vineyard teaches you to distinguish between those two things faster than almost anything else I've encountered.
You control the timing of the choices within your reach. You do not control the weather in August. You do not control whether a late frost takes twenty percent of your crop three days before harvest. You do not control the market's patience with your timeline.
Technology is the same. You control the quality of the science and the integrity of the engineering. You do not control when the infrastructure catches up. You do not control customer adoption curves.
The founders and investors I respect most in both fields have made peace with that distinction. They are disciplined about what they can influence and embrace, and what they can't.
That combination — rigor on execution, humility on outcomes — is rarer than it should be.
The bottle and the breakthrough have something in common
When you drink a truly exceptional wine, it feels effortless. Balanced. Like it couldn't have been any other way.
That feeling is the result of complexity handled so well it disappears.
The best technology products feel the same. The user doesn't see the years of engineering underneath. They just experience something that works.
Both fields are chasing that: the point where everything difficult becomes invisible, and what remains is just the thing itself.
I find that goal worth building toward, whether the material is silicon or Pinot Noir.
